A detergent named after a bacterium

Every July and August, Korean search traffic fills up with the same complaint: laundry that smells like a wet rag even after a full wash cycle. The country's monsoon season overlaps with tropical night humidity, and clothes simply refuse to dry. What's interesting is how the household-goods industry answered that complaint. Instead of adding stronger fragrance, brands started naming the bacterium.

The clearest example comes from LG Household & Health Care (LG H&H), one of Korea's two dominant consumer-goods conglomerates alongside Amorepacific. Its premium laundry line FiJi sells a product literally called "Moraxella Odor Removal Laundry Detergent, Cotton Scent, 2.1L." According to Korean trade press, it ranked as the top-selling laundry detergent on Coupang — Korea's largest e-commerce platform, roughly the local equivalent of Amazon — based on July monthly figures. Reports emphasize that the growth came largely from user reviews and tip-sharing on social media rather than a heavy ad push.

What Moraxella actually is

Moraxella is a genus of bacteria commonly found on human skin and throughout ordinary living environments. Household-science researchers and detergent makers have linked its growth on fabric — and the metabolic byproducts it leaves behind — to that distinctive sour, musty smell people associate with towels that never fully dried. The term first became a marketing keyword in Japan's consumer-goods market before crossing into Korea.

One clarification matters here. The presence of a bacterial name on a bottle does not mean your laundry poses a hygiene emergency. Household laundry odor is usually a compound effect: microbes, residual sebum and sweat, leftover detergent and softener film, plus slow drying. Claiming that eliminating one organism removes all odor overstates the case. And if you experience recurring skin irritation or allergy symptoms, that's a conversation for a medical professional, not a detergent swap.

What the sales rank really tells us

The more instructive story is about consumer behavior, not chemistry. Shoppers increasingly skip vague promises like "fresh scent" and reach for products that give their specific annoyance a name. Call it problem-naming marketing — the same playbook already used by anti-hair-loss shampoos, exfoliating skincare, and limescale removers.

That strategy carries a cost, though. Once you put a bacterium on the label, buyers expect to notice a difference immediately, and they churn fast when they don't. Rankings built on reviews can collapse on reviews. A No. 1 sales position is best read as a snapshot of popularity, not a performance certificate.

Fix these before you change detergent

In practice, a large share of laundry odor complaints trace back to habits and hardware rather than the detergent itself.

1) How long wet laundry sits

The longer damp laundry stays inside the drum after the cycle ends, the higher the odor risk. A practical target is drying within 30 minutes of the spin finishing. If you use delayed-start timers, set them to end while you're actually home.

2) The machine itself

The back of the drum, the rubber gasket folds, and the detergent dispenser all accumulate scale and residue. In humid months, run a drum-cleaning cycle roughly once a month, and leave the door open after use so the interior dries out.

3) Overdosing detergent and softener

The intuition that more detergent means cleaner clothes is mostly wrong. Leftover surfactant and fabric-softener film coat fibers and can give microbes something to cling to. If towels are your worst offender, cutting softener is a reasonable first experiment.

4) Water temperature and load size

For repeat offenders like towels and workout gear, using the warmest cycle the care label allows helps break down organic residue. Also fill the drum only to about 70–80% capacity so items can move freely through water and detergent.

5) Indoor drying setup

Indoor drying during monsoon season is often unavoidable, but spacing garments apart and running a fan or dehumidifier dramatically shortens drying time. The single biggest variable in odor control remains total time spent damp.

The takeaway

The rise of a bacterium-targeting detergent signals that Korea's household-goods market is shifting toward narrower, problem-specific solutions — a trend visible in skincare and cleaning products alike. As a consumer, you don't have to fully trust that framing or dismiss it as pure marketing. A sensible test: use the product on one or two chronically smelly items for a month, and change your drying routine over the same period so you can see what actually moved the needle.

Laundry odor is a stack of overlapping conditions, not a single cause. Detergent addresses one layer of that stack. The remaining layers — timing, load size, airflow, machine cleanliness — cost nothing to adjust.
