Samsung Takes Galaxy Z Fold8 Billboards to Six Global Cities
What happened
On September 8, Samsung Electronics unveiled "Welcome to Foldables", a global outdoor advertising campaign built around its Galaxy Z Fold8 series. The digital billboards began running on September 2 in Seoul and are rolling out across landmark screens in six major cities, including Tokyo and London.
Samsung paired the announcement with two sales data points: the Fold8 series set a record for Galaxy smartphone preorders in Korea, and the phone is launching in 106 countries. The company framed the Fold line not as a showcase device but as "a phone you comfortably use every day," emphasizing foldable-tailored software, AI features, and connectivity with the wider Galaxy device ecosystem rather than raw hardware specs.
Why the campaign name matters
The tagline is the strategy. "Welcome to Foldables" is not a spec pitch — it is an invitation into a form factor. Flagship phone advertising usually leads with camera resolution or chip performance; this campaign instead speaks directly to people who have never owned a folding phone.
That reflects where the category actually stands. Since the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, foldables have fought a reputation as expensive early-adopter experiments, shaped by early durability complaints, thickness, and inconsistent app scaling. Reaching an eighth generation is itself evidence that much of that early risk has been worked through. Samsung's pivot from specs to everyday usability reads as a deliberate repositioning aimed at mainstream buyers rather than enthusiasts.
Reading the preorder record and the 106 countries
The all-time Galaxy preorder record is notable because it is measured against all Galaxy smartphones, not just foldables — meaning a folding phone outpaced the conventional bar-type Galaxy S flagships in that metric. If so, foldables can no longer be dismissed as a niche line. One caveat: the figure is Korea-only. Korea is Samsung's home market, and local carrier subsidy structures make premium-device preorders unusually heavy there, so the record doesn't automatically translate into global demand.
The 106-country rollout, meanwhile, shows how far distribution has widened compared with the first foldables. The choice of ad cities fits the same logic: Seoul is the home market, Tokyo is a market where Apple's share is overwhelmingly dominant, and London is a gateway to premium European buyers. In other words, the campaign is less about awareness of a new model and more about cementing category ownership in markets where Apple has no foldable yet.
What changes for buyers
As foldables shift from specialty hardware to just another flagship option, practical effects follow. Higher volumes and broader availability tend to improve accessory selection, repair-part supply, and app support for large inner displays. The flip side is what shoppers still need to verify themselves: the campaign's emphasis on software, AI, and cross-device continuity points to day-to-day usability as the selling point, but physical trade-offs — crease visibility, weight, hinge durability — are still best judged with the device in hand.
For the industry, the campaign also functions as brand defense. With Chinese manufacturers narrowing the hardware gap in foldables, leaning on the idea that Samsung is the foldable category — rather than competing on component numbers — is a reasonable use of marketing spend.
