Memory Prices Jump 30-40% — and Phone Prices Follow

Samsung Electronics has reportedly settled on a 30-40% price increase for memory chips supplied in the first quarter of next year, and has wrapped up negotiations with major customers. The detail that stands out: Apple — historically the toughest negotiator in the component supply chain — is said to have accepted the hike. That suggests this is not a short-lived adjustment but a pricing regime that will hold for a while.
The industry has a name for it: "chipflation," the pass-through of rising semiconductor costs into finished-product prices. Reports in Korea note that prices are climbing not just on upcoming devices but on already-released older handsets, and a higher Galaxy S26 price is now widely expected when Samsung's next flagship arrives.
Why memory is spiking now
The driver is AI datacenter demand. Wafer capacity is being funneled into high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and server-grade DDR5, which leaves the commodity DRAM and NAND that goes into phones and PCs comparatively short. For memory makers, allocating lines to higher-margin AI products is simply the rational choice — and mobile DRAM pricing gets pushed up as a structural consequence.
That's what separates this cycle from the last one. The 2017-2018 memory supercycle was a demand shock from booming smartphone sales and server buildouts; once supply caught up, prices collapsed through 2019. This time, long-dated AI infrastructure investment is tying up the capacity itself, so relief may be slower to arrive until new fabs come online.
How it reaches the price tag
Memory's share of a phone's bill of materials varies by tier, but flagships now ship with 12-16GB of RAM and 256GB or more of storage as a baseline, making them more memory-dependent than earlier generations. When that input cost rises by a third, there's only so much a manufacturer can absorb. The realistic levers are three: raise the sticker price, cut base RAM/storage configurations, or shrink promotional spending.
Expect all three at once. Signs of thinner carrier subsidies and retail discounts are already being reported — and for a brand, quietly trimming discounts is the fastest way to raise what a buyer actually pays without touching the headline price.
What it means if you're buying a phone
First, the old rule that last year's model gets cheap starts breaking down. Normally a new launch pushes the predecessor's price down, but when component costs rise, units still being manufactured cost more to build, erasing the room for cuts. Korean reports describe prices rising on both new and older models.
Second, storage upgrades get more expensive. The premium for stepping from 256GB to 512GB is tied almost directly to memory spot pricing, so that gap is likely to widen. If you were planning to buy up in capacity, doing it before the increase filters through is the cheaper side of the trade.
Third, this isn't a phone-only story. PCs, tablets, consoles and SSDs all draw on the same DRAM and NAND pools. Standalone RAM kits and SSDs typically reprice faster than finished devices do.
The industry angle
For memory suppliers the hike is an earnings tailwind — but even inside one company the incentives clash. Samsung sells the memory and also builds the Galaxy, so its handset division eats the same cost increase it is charging everyone else. Pure device makers like Apple and Google, which buy all their memory externally, are exposed to whatever their leverage can't offset. Apple accepting the hike is the telling part: when a buyer with that much volume stops fighting on price, it usually means securing allocation now matters more than the per-unit cost.
How much of this actually lands on retail prices will still vary by brand and by competitive pressure. In budget and mid-range lines, the first response may be to quietly downgrade specs rather than raise prices outright.
