Hyundai and Kia Give Used EV Batteries a Second Life as Storage

What happened
Hyundai Motor and Kia have launched a joint demonstration project with LG Energy Solution, Hyundai Engineering and Wonik PNE to reuse retired EV batteries as energy storage. Announced at a September 10 ceremony, the project takes battery packs pulled from vehicles built on Hyundai Motor Group's dedicated EV platform, E-GMP, and redeploys them largely intact.
The industry term is UBESS — Used Battery Energy Storage System. The operating concept is straightforward: charge the UBESS during cheap off-peak hours, then discharge that stored electricity through fast chargers when grid rates are high. Hyundai and Kia describe it as the first domestic case using E-GMP packs for this purpose.
Why now
Korea's EV market scaled up around 2020, and E-GMP vehicles — the Ioniq 5, EV6 and their siblings — have now been on the road long enough that the first large wave of retired packs is becoming a real logistics problem rather than a theoretical one. Shredding batteries to recover lithium, nickel and cobalt is one answer, but that route's economics swing hard with raw material prices.
Reuse is different. Keeping the pack close to its original form avoids most of the disassembly and refining cost, and a battery that no longer meets automotive standards often retains plenty of capacity for stationary duty. The consortium's makeup is telling: an automaker, a cell manufacturer, an engineering firm and a power-conversion equipment maker — effectively the whole battery value chain in one pilot.
What actually changes
The most immediate effect is on charging-station economics. DC fast chargers draw huge instantaneous power, which drives up contracted capacity charges and peak tariffs. Pairing them with storage lets an operator buy electricity overnight and dispense it during the day, potentially cutting both peak load and power bills. That matters in a market trying to add chargers faster than the grid can be reinforced.
For consumers, the longer-term question is residual value. If retired packs have a paying buyer, that eventually feeds into used EV prices and the cost structure around battery replacement and warranties. Still, this is a pilot, not a commercial rollout, so any specific savings figure or deployment scale would be speculation at this stage.
How it compares
Second-life battery storage isn't a new concept — overseas automakers and cell makers have run similar trials for years. What distinguishes this effort is that it works at the whole E-GMP pack level rather than harvesting individual cells for reassembly, and that a carmaker and its cell supplier are validating a standardized platform battery together on home turf.
That standardization is the point. Second-life projects have historically stalled because every model has a different pack geometry and battery management system, killing any economy of scale. Anchoring the process to a single high-volume platform makes collection, diagnostics and reassembly repeatable — a pragmatic choice if the goal is a business rather than a showcase.
The open questions
Three things will decide whether this scales. How quickly and cheaply can remaining pack health be diagnosed? How will safety certification and regulation treat reused packs? And with new LFP cell prices continuing to fall, can second-life batteries stay price-competitive? If the pilot produces credible answers, it could become a reference model for Korea's used-battery industry rather than a one-off project.
