LG Energy Solution's Q3: EV Batteries Finally Rebound

What happened
LG Energy Solution — the battery arm of Korea's LG Group and one of the world's largest EV cell makers — reported an operating profit of 756 billion won for the third quarter of 2026, its second consecutive profitable quarter. Revenue hit a record high for any quarter in the company's history, and operating profit rose 25% from the previous quarter, according to the filing it submitted to Korea's Financial Supervisory Service.
Two engines drove the result: expanding energy storage system (ESS) output in North America, and a recovery in EV battery shipments tied to growth in the European EV market. The company's framing is notable — both businesses pulled in the same direction at once.
Why it matters
For the past two years the dominant narrative in the battery industry has been the EV demand slowdown, often called the "chasm" in Korea. As European and North American automakers pushed back electrification targets and trimmed cell orders, Korean battery makers saw utilization rates and margins squeezed simultaneously. Their escape hatch was ESS: converting EV lines to storage cells or allocating new capacity to grid and data-center storage demand, filling the hole left by weaker automotive orders.
What makes this quarter different is that both pillars grew together. Instead of ESS merely masking EV weakness, recovering European EV cell production stacked on top of it. Whether that EV recovery is a temporary inventory restock or the start of a genuine trend will only be clear across the next few quarters of shipment data.
What changes for the EV market
A cell maker restarting lines is an indirect signal about automakers. Cell orders rising means OEM production plans are firming up, and that typically shows up in new model launches and volume expansion a few quarters later. The European origin of the recovery is worth watching too: Europe's electrification pace has swung with CO2 regulation and subsidy changes more than almost any other market.
It would be premature, though, to assume buyers feel this immediately. Cell pricing, automaker pricing strategy, and national subsidies are separate variables. Better battery margins ≠ cheaper EVs — the two should be read separately.
Things to watch
- If ESS keeps growing as a share of revenue, the company's earnings may become more sensitive to North American grid and data-center investment cycles than to the EV cycle itself.
- Whether the European EV rebound reflects one large customer's order or broad demand across multiple automakers determines how durable it is.
- North American ESS is exposed to local-content rules and tax-credit policy, so regulatory shifts can feed directly into results.
