Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra Lands on TIME's Best Inventions 2026

What happened
On October 16, Samsung Electronics announced that three of its products made TIME magazine's "Best Inventions of 2026" list: the Galaxy S26 Ultra in consumer electronics, the Bespoke AI Family Hub refrigerator in home appliances, and the Odyssey G8 gaming monitor.
What stands out is how TIME framed the phone. Rather than leading with camera megapixels or chipset benchmarks, the magazine described it as a privacy-focused smartphone, singling out a "privacy display" feature that blocks the screen from being viewed at an angle. LG Electronics' wireless OLED TV also appeared on the same list, putting both of Korea's major consumer electronics makers on it.
Why privacy became the headline
Smartphone hardware differentiation has been narrowing for years. Display brightness, camera sensors and mobile processors have all converged enough that "which one is faster" no longer carries a marketing story. On-device AI filled that gap for the past two or three generations — and as the volume of personal data processed on the handset itself grew, the obvious follow-up question became whether that data is safe.
A privacy display is the most physical, immediately verifiable answer to that question. Encryption and on-device inference are invisible to users; a screen that your seatmate on the train cannot read is something you can confirm in one second. The fact that this is implemented in the display layer itself, rather than as a software security setting, is likely why TIME treated it as an "invention" rather than a feature.
How this differs from what came before
Blocking side viewing angles is not a new idea. Privacy filter films have been standard issue on laptops and bank-branch monitors for decades, and some notebook makers have built switchable privacy modes directly into their panels. The shared limitation of those approaches: stick-on films degrade head-on image quality too, and the toggle is often absent or crude.
Phones make that tradeoff much harder. The screen is small, brightness and color accuracy define the entire camera and video experience, and users move between public and private settings dozens of times a day. So the real question is not whether the blocking works, but how cleanly it switches on and off. Reading TIME's nod as an endorsement of execution quality, rather than of the concept itself, is the more reasonable interpretation.
What actually changes for buyers and the industry
For consumers, the value depends heavily on context. If you have a long public-transit commute or regularly open work chat and banking apps in cafés and airports, this removes the hassle of buying and applying a film. If you mostly use your phone at home or in the car, it probably won't move your purchase decision at all. The feature's value is highly situational, and that's worth being honest about.
The more interesting signal is for the industry. When a mainstream outlet like TIME introduces a flagship phone by its privacy posture rather than its performance, it suggests the marketing axis of premium phones is shifting. Apple has spent years building privacy into its brand identity; Samsung's move differs in that it makes privacy visible through hardware. Competitors may well adopt similar panel technology in their own flagships — and if they do, privacy displays could slide from differentiator to baseline spec within a couple of generations.
A caveat on reading award lists
TIME's Best Inventions names hundreds of products across many categories each year. Inclusion guarantees neither commercial success nor technical superiority. What the list is genuinely useful for is showing which stories the industry is telling right now. That this year's answer, for a flagship phone, was neither pixel counts nor AI benchmarks but "a screen the person next to you can't see" is itself the story.
