Summer Parking: What Never to Leave in a Hot Car

Why a Parked Car Becomes a Hot Box

Every summer, Korean broadcasters run the same public-safety segment, and every summer it stays relevant: a car left in direct sun is not just uncomfortable, it is a small pressure vessel. Glass lets short-wave solar radiation in and traps the longer-wave heat that surfaces re-radiate. With no airflow, the cabin becomes a greenhouse, and interior surfaces — dashboard, steering wheel, seat frames, anything black — climb far above the ambient air temperature.

That gap between "it's hot outside" and "it's dangerous inside" is what catches drivers off guard. Air temperature in the cabin is one number; the temperature of a dark dashboard baking under glass is another, much higher one. Objects resting on that dashboard are exposed to the worst of it.

Items That Do Not Belong in a Summer Car

The advice from the MBC segment is simple and worth repeating: leave heat-sensitive and pressurized items out of the car. The usual suspects are things most of us carry without thinking.

Pressurized and flammable

Disposable lighters, portable butane canisters, hairspray, dry shampoo, insect repellent aerosols, and canned carbonated drinks all share one trait: internal pressure rises with temperature. A container designed for room-temperature storage sitting on a sun-baked dashboard is being used outside its intended conditions. Manufacturer labels on these products almost universally warn against storing them in direct sunlight or in a closed vehicle — that guidance exists precisely for this scenario.

Lithium batteries and electronics

Power banks, spare camera batteries, e-cigarette devices, and wireless earbud cases contain lithium-ion cells. Heat is the enemy of lithium chemistry in two ways: it accelerates permanent capacity loss, and in the worst case a damaged or defective cell can enter thermal runaway. Even setting aside the dramatic failure mode, repeated heat cycling degrades capacity, so leaving a power bank in the car all summer is a slow way to ruin it.

Everything else that suffers

Medications lose potency outside their labeled storage range. Cosmetics separate. Plastic water bottles left half-full for weeks are not a health emergency, but they are not appealing either. And a smartphone or dash-mounted device left in the sun will often simply refuse to operate until it cools.

Parking Technique Actually Matters

Two habits mentioned in the coverage are easy and cost nothing.

First, park with the rear facing the sun when a shaded spot isn't available. The windshield is the largest piece of glass in the car and sits at a shallow angle, so it collects the most solar energy and dumps it straight onto the dashboard and front seats. Turning the back of the car toward the sun shifts the load to the smaller, steeper rear glass and spares the controls you have to touch first.

Second, crack the windows slightly. Even a finger-width gap allows hot air near the roof to escape and lets convection do a little work. The obvious caveat: this is a judgment call about where you're parked and for how long. A gap wide enough to reach through is a security problem, and an open window is a bad idea in a sudden summer downpour — which Korean summers deliver frequently.

Sunshades, windshield covers, and steering-wheel covers are the low-tech version of the same idea. Some newer cars with remote-start or connected-app climate control can pre-cool the cabin before you get in; if your vehicle has it, summer is the season it earns its keep.

Before a Long Drive: Coolant and Tires

Heat doesn't only affect the cabin. Two mechanical items deserve a look before a long summer trip.

Coolant level and condition determine whether the engine can shed heat under load — and load is exactly what summer traffic in stop-and-go conditions on a hot day creates. Checking the reservoir level when the engine is cold takes seconds. If coolant is chronically low, that is a leak to have diagnosed, not a level to keep topping up.

Tires deserve equal attention. Hot pavement plus sustained highway speed means high tire temperatures, and the combination of under-inflation and heat is the classic setup for structural failure. Check pressure against the placard on the driver's door jamb, not against a number you remember. Look at tread depth and, just as importantly, at the sidewalls for cracking or bulges. Because pressure readings rise as tires warm up, measure when they're cold for an accurate baseline.

Know Where Your Fire Extinguisher Is

Korean regulations have progressively expanded the requirement for onboard fire extinguishers to smaller passenger vehicles, so many drivers now have one without ever having thought about it. Two questions are worth answering before you need the answer: where is it, and can you reach it from the driver's seat without unpacking the trunk?

Also worth checking: the pressure gauge needle should sit in the green band, and the extinguisher shouldn't be rolling loose in the cargo area where it can become a projectile. And a note of realism — a car-sized extinguisher is for a small, early-stage fire. If flames are already coming from under the hood or the cabin is filling with smoke, the correct action is to get everyone out and away from the vehicle and call emergency services.

The Takeaway

None of this is complicated. Take the lighter and the power bank with you, point the tailgate at the sun, glance at the coolant and the tires before a long haul, and know where the extinguisher lives. Prevention costs about a minute — which is a much better trade than the alternatives.
